Frequently asked questions & all answers
Why does my tea taste different today?
The basis of our herbal and tea specialties are natural products, mainly from sustainable wild collection and ecologically working farms. The taste of the plants can change with the soil conditions, the geographical location and the climate at their place of origin. We try to compensate for these variations in taste through our experience and purchasing policies. They can not be completely excluded.
What does wild collection mean?
Medicinal herbs from wild collections are of special quality. They could develop powerfully in untouched nature under the sun. Handpicked and picked by experienced herbalists, they then come to us. With our herbs from wild collections we always pay attention to sustainability, so that enough plants remain at the place of discovery and can grow again in peace.

Important: Please always consult a doctor or pharmacist in case of serious health complaints. Medicinal herbs unfold their effect best in prevention and for minor illnesses. You will always find the right DR. KOTTAS medicinal tea at your pharmacy, where they will advise you on your choice. However, you can also find a first overview here.
Can I substitute medicines with medicinal herbs?
As self-medication for minor illnesses as well as for prevention, medicinal herbs can be the measure of first choice. In the case of medically prescribed drug therapies, we recommend that they be followed exactly. However, medicinal herbs can support conventional medical therapies in many cases. Through their own effect or in the sense of compensating for the side effects of the medication. Sometimes medicinal herbs actually help to save one or the other medication. Talk to your doctor about it!
What is the residue in my teacup?
Mechanical abrasion of the plants in DR. KOTTAS tea specialties produces microscopic granules that escape through the fine pores of the filter bag and remain as a fine residue in the tea cup. This happens especially with certain tea ingredients. With hard-shelled herbs and fruits, such as fennel or caraway, or with delicate leafy plants. The following always applies: The residues are completely harmless and can be drunk without hesitation.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are volatile, mostly vegetable oils with a characteristic, pleasant odor. They are a complex mixture of various organic substances and have multiple effects that are beneficial to human health when used correctly.
What are flavonoids?
Polyphenols are among the secondary plant substances and occur in plants as bioactive substances such as colorants, flavorings and tannins. Some protect the plant, others attract insects for pollination through their color. Many polyphenols are considered to be beneficial to human health and have, among other things, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, i.e. they act as “radical scavengers”.

When are plants medicinal plants or medicinal herbs?
A medicinal plant is used for healing purposes or to alleviate ailments because of its content of active ingredients. Even within a plant species, only a sufficient content of active ingredients ensures its healing effect. The active ingredient content is also determined by the climate at the plant’s location, by the time of harvest, and by several other factors. Incidentally, the active ingredients of medicinal plants are rarely evenly distributed throughout the plant. Therefore, for healing purposes, those parts of the plant are used which, according to experience or research, have the highest content of active ingredients. Medicinal plants are collected from the wild or cultivated. Their oldest and still the most common form of administration is the medicinal herbal tea.
Are there any poisonous herbs?
Yes. Many plants poisonous to humans or certain animals grow in nature, and among them are herbs. Therefore, when gathering herbs in meadows, caution should be exercised or the advice of an expert should be sought.
What does pharmacopoeia quality or pharmacy quality mean?
Pharmacopoeia quality or pharmacy quality means that a medicinal plant contains at least the same amount and quality of active ingredients as prescribed by the European Pharmacopoeia of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission and national pharmacopoeias. Pharmacy quality thus guarantees the active ingredient content and thus the best effect of the medicinal plant. Furthermore, the plant is tested for identity and purity and examined for residues (pesticides, heavy metals, microbiology). Many DR. KOTTAS medicinal herbal teas are approved or registered herbal medicines and have pharmacy or pharmacopoeia quality.
